How To Actually Increase Your Natural Energy Levels and Stay Motivated

In today’s society we are more sedentary than ever. With a large amount of our jobs and, most of our entertainment being digital, the time spent sitting for prolonged periods of time is at an all-time high. There are millions of people who wake up, go to work sitting at a desk for 8-12 hours a day, then come home and spend another 5 hours playing video games or watching tv, with only a 30-minute walk as their only exercise. We then wonder, why am I so tired all the time? Why am I not performing well at my job? Why am I over/under weight? Why am I so depressed? The answer my friend is that you need to move more!

Movement and exercise are intrinsic human activities. We evolved to be distance hunters, who could run longer and further than any other animal. We have spent thousands of years working hard lives full of physical labor, yet nowadays when we are moving less than ever, we complain about being tired all the time, and stiff in our backs, necks and hips. How could this be?

We are taught that exercise makes us sore, that injuries happen when we push ourselves out of our comfort zones. While these things are true, they aren’t the only outcomes. Exercise makes us sore yes but, it also makes us strong, and makes us resilient mentally and physically. Pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones can lead to injury and heartache, but it also can lead to greatness, and self-improvement. Just because we are afraid of the negative outcomes, does not mean the positives don’t exist. It’s up to you to realize this and, harness its power.

Taking the first steps, literally and figuratively, is the hardest part of any journey. Once we’re going, we don’t want to stop. Once we’ve committed to something, we don’t want to let it go. So, have a destination in mind, and start. After that it’s just one step after another. Take control over your life one step at a time.

Gradually increasing your work capacity is the key. To do this we simply need to add in more movement to our daily lives. Start small with a simple home workout routine. Once you’ve started that add in some stretching to fight against aches and pains. When you’re ready, get a membership for a gym, or start your own home gym. Learn about exercise programming and start doing cardio as much as possible. Eventually you’ll look back and wonder how you could have ever just sat around for hours a day. You’ll feel strange for taking a day off of exercise. This is the goal.

Don’t just get motivated for a day, spontaneously sign up for a gym and, go balls to the wall right away. This will get you injured, or worse burnt out. Slowly develop discipline and make your motivation an intrinsic part of you. Whatever your reason it has to be something you believe in. For me it’s my health.
